I made this same pivot myself at 37, coming from a completely different industry with zero technical background. So no, thirty-something or forty-something is not too old to start over. If you believe it's too late, then it is. That belief will stop you before anything else does. What actually determines whether it's "too late" isn't your age. It's whether you're willing to learn, stay open-minded about what's possible for you, and commit the time it takes to get there. Age was never the barrier. Conviction is.

It depends on what you see when you look ahead.

If you look ahead and see a dead end, or a destination you don't actually want, that's a career change. If you still see opportunity within your industry, just outside your current team or organization, a new job might do the trick. In today's job market, that's how long the average job seeker is on the hunt. Where you land within that range depends on your existing skillset, how much upskilling you need, the strength of your network, and how big a jump you're making from where you are now.

A lot of us feel this way, especially in the middle of a big shift, surrounded by everyone else's highlight reel and a constant stream of opinions about how far along you "should" be. Don't let anyone should all over you. That feeling usually shows up when you're in a headspace of lack, focused on how much further you have to go instead of how far you've already come. Look in the rearview mirror instead, and measure how far you've already traveled rather than how much further is left.

No industry is truly "safe," and if that fear is sitting with you right now, it's a valid one to have.

Tech moves faster than a lot of industries, which can make it feel more volatile. That's just its nature. But no field is immune to layoffs, especially in this economy, and if you're navigating that fear (or already living it), that's real. I made this move because I saw more opportunity than risk. And once I learned how to navigate the industry itself, it stopped mattering what happened at any one job. The skillset to build a career here doesn't disappear when one role does.

Start with a personal assessment. You can get clear on what you don't want before you know what you do.

Figure out what you're done tolerating, and why you actually want a change in the first place. Even if you can't name the exact role yet, you probably know how you want to feel and how you want your job to fit into the life you want to live. That vision is what points you toward the right roles, companies, and industries. This is exactly where my PIVOT Framework starts, the personal assessment phase, because without clarity on your north star and why you're chasing it, nothing else in your strategy holds up.

They go deeper than the usual list of soft skills. I break them into 4 layers: core foundational skills (how you work), domain expertise (where you've worked), product/process knowledge (how you execute), and customer/problem familiarity (who you understand).

Most people think "transferable skills" means vague stuff like "communication" or "teamwork." That's one layer, and it's the least interesting one. The real value is in the combination: your industry knowledge, the tools and systems you already know, and the specific customers or problems you understand. Stack those four together and that's your actual value proposition walking into tech.

I use a method called PROOF: five sources of evidence instead of guessing.

Peer input (ask colleagues what strengths show up again and again), review your history (pull patterns from old job descriptions and performance reviews), outside assessments (for vocabulary, to describe what you already have), observe and reflect on your "damn, I'm good" moments, and filter down to the 5-7 skills that actually matter for tech roles. It replaces guesswork with evidence.

Stop naming the skill and start naming the outcome.

"I'm a good communicator" is vague. "I trained 40 employees on a new onboarding process and cut ramp-up time by two weeks" is not. I teach clients to map their experience into a Skills Match Matrix, translating what they've done into the employer's actual language: core skills, functional skills, tools and systems. Specific, outcome-based language is what makes a transferable skill land.

Yes, if you position them correctly.

Tech companies need people who can talk to customers, onboard clients, train teams, and manage projects just as much as they need engineers. Your skills count. Your resume probably isn't speaking their language yet, and that's usually the real gap.

Every client I've worked with started out believing that about themselves.

Former teachers, customer service reps, retail managers, and operations coordinators have all sat in that same doubt. The skill is there. It's usually just buried under a job title that doesn't sound "techy." That's exactly what PROOF and the 4 Layers are built to surface.

You don't need to learn to code for non-technical tech roles. You do need AI literacy.

Roles like Customer Success, Implementation, Enablement, Operations, and Program Management need people who can talk to customers, run processes, and manage relationships. Building software isn't part of the job. AI literacy is a separate requirement now. You need to understand how AI is already reshaping the role you're targeting and how people in that role are actually using it day to day. That doesn't mean building models or writing code. It means knowing the tools changing the work and using them yourself.

A resume is a positioning document. Write it toward the target role.

Lead with a job title aligned to what you're going for, even if it doesn't match your last title exactly. Then translate your day-to-day into outcome-focused language using the employer's vocabulary. "Teaching" becomes "training and enablement." "Scheduling" becomes "operations coordination." Same experience, described in the language the room you're trying to get into actually uses.

It varies by role, but expect communication, coordination, and problem-solving to be at the center of your day.

Customer Success looks like managing accounts and helping customers get value from a product. Implementation looks like onboarding new clients and configuring systems to their needs. Enablement looks like training internal teams on tools and processes. Program Management looks like keeping cross-functional projects on track. Across all of them, you're translating between people and process, using tools like CRMs, ticketing systems, and dashboards to do it.

Research the role deeply before you commit to chasing it.

Look at real job postings and the actual profiles of people already in the role, not just the title. Get clear on what the role really involves day-to-day, where the skill gaps are between what you have and what's required, and whether that day-to-day actually matches what you want out of your next chapter. Those clues tell you whether a role is worth pursuing before you spend months chasing it.

That's normal, and it's learnable fast.

Every industry has its own language, and tech is no different. You don't need to memorize a glossary before you start. You need enough fluency to follow a job posting, hold a conversation in an interview, and sound credible in your first 90 days. That comes with exposure, and it comes quickly once you're immersed in it.

Not necessarily. For a lot of my clients, it moves in the other direction over time.

I crossed into six figures about three years into my own transition, with a first six-figure salary of $102K, and I've grown well past that since. Your starting offer still depends on how you position your experience. But the earning ceiling in tech is real, and it opens up as you build tenure and track record in the industry.

It's competitive, and strategy beats volume.

The market rewards targeted, well-positioned applications over mass applying to everything remotely related. That means fewer, better-aimed applications, a resume and LinkedIn that speak the employer's language, and real outreach instead of only relying on the "easy apply" button. Competitive doesn't mean impossible. It means sloppy applications don't work anymore.

You acknowledge the pivot, then redirect the conversation to evidence.

Something like, "I haven't held this exact title before, but in my last role I did very similar work," then describe the responsibility and outcome in their language. When we work together, we build your story bank: a set of go-to examples from your background, each one broken into situation, task, action, and result, so you always have concrete evidence ready no matter what the interviewer asks.

Generally, you can expect a focus on innovation and on the customer, product, or service you're supporting. Beyond that, culture depends on the specific organization: its size, its leadership, its age, and its industry. A fast-growing startup and a decades-old enterprise tech company can feel worlds apart, even though they're both "tech." It's worth researching a specific company's culture during your informational interviews rather than assuming based on industry alone.

Probably, but it depends on when you last updated it and what techniques/strategy you used.

A resume is a positioning document, not a career autobiography. If yours was built to reflect your last role, it's aimed at the wrong target now. That means rewriting your summary, reordering your key skills, and translating your bullets into outcome-focused language for the role you actually want. Some sections might survive as-is, but expect real rework rather than a light polish.

Writing it like a history report instead of a pitch for where you're going.

Most resumes list tasks in chronological order and hope the reader connects the dots. Hiring managers won't do that work for you. Every bullet needs to show impact, using an action, the context, how you did it, and the outcome, so the reader immediately sees value instead of just duties.

The jury's still out on this one. I recommend 1-2 pages with content that's highly relevant, and cutting the rest.

Length matters less than relevance. If you're keeping every job you've ever had just to fill space, cut it. I recommend keeping it to 1-2 pages, packed with only what's relevant to the role you're targeting. The test isn't page count. It's whether every line earns its place.

Lead with the role you're targeting, and let your current title take a back seat.

A strong headline follows a simple formula: target role, top skills or areas of expertise, and a value statement or outcome. Something like "Customer Success Specialist | Relationship Management, Onboarding, Retention | Helping SaaS teams reduce churn and keep customers engaged." It should be keyword-rich, aligned with the language in the job postings you're targeting, and consistent with your resume.

It's normal to feel like it doesn't line up perfectly, but there's a right way and a wrong way to handle it.

Positioning is a bit of a dance, especially if you don't want to signal to your current employer that you're preparing for a change. You have real room to work with in how you describe your work: emphasizing the parts of your role that align with where you're headed, framing your accomplishments in your target industry's language. What you shouldn't do is blatantly lie or invent a job title you never actually held. Careful, honest positioning will carry you a long way. A fabricated title will not.

A strong profile matters most to start, but posting is what supercharges your credibility.

Thanks to AI, everyone's resume and profile look polished now. Showing up and sharing what you know, what you do, and how you think is what lets you pass the "is this person real and legit" check that people in hiring roles now have to run, since AI-polished profiles are everywhere. Consistency and clarity beat virality here. You don't need to post daily or go viral. A handful of thoughtful posts is enough to start building that credibility.

They can help, but they can't do the strategic work for you.

A lot of my clients have already used tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini to polish their resume. These tools are great for brainstorming and generating language to work with. Treat what they produce as a first draft you then refine yourself, never as the finished product. They can make your writing sound more polished without actually translating your experience into tech language that resonates with hiring managers. That translation piece is what I help with: knowing your target role, your transferable skills, and how to speak the employer's language.

It's how people describe you when you're not in the room, whether you've built it on purpose or not.

You already have a personal brand, whether you've been intentional about it or not; it's just been passive so far. Building it on purpose means deciding what you want to be known for professionally: your expertise, your way of working, the outcomes you deliver, and then being consistent about showing that, especially where recruiters and hiring managers are actually looking, like LinkedIn.

You need enough visibility to be found and trusted. That doesn't require becoming a content creator.

Personal brand isn't about being loud or building an audience. It can be as understated as a clear, consistent LinkedIn presence, a resume and story that stay aligned, and a couple of thoughtful posts a month. The goal is credibility, not visibility for its own sake. Start smaller than you think you need to.

You build it around the direction you're headed, using the evidence you already have.

Your personal brand right now centers on the transferable skills, results, and expertise you already have, framed toward where you're going. Positioning matters more than experience level at this stage. You're showing what you bring and where you're aimed, grounded in real evidence rather than a title you haven't earned yet.

Start with what you're already good at and what people already come to you for.

This connects back to the same evidence-based process as identifying your transferable skills: what do peers and colleagues consistently rely on you for, what patterns show up across your work history, where have you had "damn, I'm good" moments. Your personal brand doesn't need to be invented from scratch. It gets built from patterns that are already there.

It might, but I think we need to squash the idea that self-promotion is a bad thing in the first place.

No one is coming to hand you the opportunity. You have to advocate for yourself and for what you want. People can't hire you, refer you, or think of you for a role if they don't know you exist and don't know what you're capable of. Talking about your work and your expertise isn't fake. It's how the world finds out you're up to the task. The real fake move is staying quiet and hoping someone notices.

Enough to be findable and credible, without broadcasting that you're job hunting.

You can build visibility around your expertise and how you think without ever announcing "I'm looking for a new job." Share insights, engage thoughtfully, and keep your LinkedIn current so your positioning does the work quietly in the background. That's enough. You don't need explicit job-search signals, like turning on "open to work," to be found and considered.

A lot of "break into tech" advice assumes you're learning to code or going into sales.
